Garbage Disposal Repair Warning Signs

There are several common garbage disposal repairs that can be made to keep your unit working properly.  If you're experiencing any of the following, your garbage disposal may need repair:

1. Your Garbage Disposal is Making Strange Noises

Garbage disposals do make some common noises when running properly including rattling, humming, and clicking.  However, If your garbage disposal starts making strange noises, it may be an indication that it is starting to go bad.

The most common noise is a grinding sound, which may be caused by the disposal blade being dull or damaged.

2. You Can't Turn On Your Garbage Disposal

If you try to turn on your garbage disposal and nothing happens, it may be an indication that it has burned out and needs to be replaced.

Another possibility is that the circuit breaker has been tripped. If this is the case, you'll need to push the reset button on the circuit breaker before you can use power on the disposal again.

3. There's Water Leaking from your Garbage Disposal

If you notice water coming from the garbage disposal, drain pipes, or the garbage disposal motor unit, it's a sign that something is wrong.

One possibility is that the seals around the blades are worn out and need to be replaced. Another possibility is that there is something caught in the garbage disposal blades and causing them to leak.

4. Your Garbage Disposal Smells Bad

If your garbage disposal starts to emit a foul odor, it's an indication that food scraps, potato peels, grease, or other old food is stuck in the drain pipe or unit and needs to be removed.

You may want to try running hot water down the drain line for a few minutes to see if that clears up the problem.

5. Your Garbage Disposal isn't Draining Properly

If you notice that food waste and water aren't draining properly from your sink when you turn on the garbage disposal, there could be several different causes.

One possibility is that something is blocking the drain pipe leading from the sink to the unit. Another possibility is that the disposer itself is clogged and needs to be cleaned out.
